Choosing new flooring can feel like one of the biggest decisions in a home project, and laminate and luxury vinyl plank always seem to land at the top of the short list. They look similar from across the room, they're both budget-friendly, and they both promise durability. But once you look closer, the differences really do shape how each one fits into daily life.
The right pick depends less on trends and more on how you actually live. Pets, kids, bare feet in the morning, spills near the sink, a bathroom that gets steamy after every shower, all of that matters. The answer is almost never the same twice, which is why it helps to understand what sets these two floors apart.
How laminate and LVP really differ
Laminate is built on a dense fiberboard core topped with a high-resolution image layer and a tough wear coat. That structure gives it a firm, solid feel underfoot and a beautifully realistic wood look. Traditional laminate handles daily life with ease, but it isn't naturally waterproof, which means standing water can be a concern in bathrooms or laundry areas.
LVP, by contrast, is built from flexible PVC layers, usually with a rigid core like SPC or WPC in modern versions. That composition makes most luxury vinyl fully waterproof, softer underfoot, and very forgiving in kitchens, mudrooms, and anywhere moisture shows up. It also tends to be a little quieter and warmer to walk on.
Five things to weigh before you decide
When clients ask us how to narrow it down, we usually walk through these five points together:
- Water exposure. If the room sees splashes, steam, or mop water often, LVP is usually the safer choice.
- Foot feel. LVP feels softer and warmer, while laminate feels firmer, more like real wood.
- Visual realism. Premium laminate often wins on deep, wood-grain texture, though top-tier LVP has closed the gap.
- Scratch resistance. Both perform well, but laminate's hard wear layer tends to shrug off pet claws a bit better.
- Sound and comfort. LVP softens footsteps naturally, while laminate may need a quality underlayment for similar quiet.
Matching the floor to each room
Kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry rooms almost always lean toward LVP because of the waterproof core. Bedrooms, formal living rooms, and dining spaces are wonderful candidates for laminate, where the denser feel and rich grain really shine.
For open-concept homes, many clients choose one or the other to keep the flow consistent from space to space. It's also worth thinking about resale. Both options look polished when professionally installed, but LVP's moisture resistance often appeals to future buyers with families.
Why installation quality matters more than people think
Even the best flooring can disappoint if the subfloor isn't prepared properly, seams aren't aligned, or expansion gaps are wrong. With either product, craftsmanship is what turns a good floor into a lasting one. A careful install protects the finish, the locking system, and the look of every plank for years.
This is one of the reasons we bring the same level of care to every kitchen and bathroom remodeling project, whether you're updating a single room or refreshing the whole home. Thoughtful measuring, acclimation time, and clean transitions all add up to a floor you'll love walking on.
Which one fits your lifestyle best
If you have young children, large dogs, or rooms that see real moisture, LVP is usually the easiest yes. If you love the look and feel of traditional wood and your home stays relatively dry, laminate is a beautiful, budget-conscious choice that holds up to everyday wear.
The good news is that you don't have to choose blindly. Seeing and touching samples in your own lighting, next to your cabinets and paint, changes everything.
